জাতীয় অধ্যাপক ড. এ কে আজাদ খান

 

অধ্যাপক এ কে আজাদ খান ১৯৬৫ সালে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ থেকে এমবিবিএস ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন, যেখানে তিনি ফার্মাকোলজি এবং ফরেনসিক মেডিসিনে বিশেষ কৃতিত্ব অর্জন করেন। ১৯৭০ সালে পাকিস্তানের কলেজ অব ফিজিশিয়ান্স অ্যান্ড সার্জনস কর্তৃক আয়োজিত এফসিপিএস (মেডিসিন) পরীক্ষায় তিনি শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব অর্জন করেন এবং কর্নেল জাফরি স্বর্ণপদক পান। ১৯৭৭ সালে তিনি অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ডি.ফিল ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন। তার গবেষণার সময়, তিনি ৫-এএসএ ভিত্তিক ওষুধ আবিষ্কার করেন, যা আজও প্রদাহজনিত অন্ত্র রোগের (IBD) দীর্ঘমেয়াদী চিকিৎসায় ব্যবহৃত হয়।

 

তিনি ১৯৯৯ সালে সুইজারল্যান্ডের বেসেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে অনারিস কৌসা সম্মাননা, ২০০১ সালে লন্ডন থেকে এফআরসিপি, ২০০১ সালে বাংলাদেশ একাডেমি অব সায়েন্সেসের ফেলোশিপ এবং ২০১২ সালে ইউনিভার্সিটি কলেজ লন্ডনের সম্মানসূচক ফেলোশিপ লাভ করেন।

 

১৯৭৭ সালে বাংলাদেশে ফিরে এসে অধ্যাপক আজাদ খান ইনস্টিটিউট অব পোস্টগ্র্যাজুয়েট মেডিসিন অ্যান্ড রিসার্চ (আইপিজিএমআর)-এ গ্যাস্ট্রোএন্টারোলজি বিভাগ গঠনে নিজেকে উৎসর্গ করেন। ১৯৮৭ সাল পর্যন্ত তিনি এই প্রতিষ্ঠানে সহকারী অধ্যাপক থেকে অধ্যাপক হিসেবে বিভিন্ন পদে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তার প্রচেষ্টার ফলে শুধু আইপিজিএমআর নয়, সারা দেশে গ্যাস্ট্রোএন্টারোলজি সেবার প্রসার ঘটে। তিনি বাংলাদেশ গ্যাস্ট্রোএন্টারোলজি সোসাইটির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি।

 

১৯৯০ সালে তিনি বারডেমে (বাংলাদেশ ইনস্টিটিউট অব রিসার্চ অ্যান্ড রিহ্যাবিলিটেশন ইন ডায়াবেটিস, এন্ডোক্রাইন অ্যান্ড মেটাবলিক ডিজঅর্ডার্স) গবেষণা ও উন্নয়নের পূর্ণকালীন পরিচালক হিসেবে যোগ দেন এবং ১৯৯৮ সাল পর্যন্ত এই দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তার তত্ত্বাবধানে বারডেম একটি গবেষণা দল গড়ে তোলে, যা জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতি অর্জন করে।

 

তিনি ডায়াবেটিক অ্যাসোসিয়েশন অব বাংলাদেশের মহাসচিব হিসেবে ১৯৯৮ থেকে ২০০৭ পর্যন্ত এবং এরপর থেকে বর্তমান পর্যন্ত সভাপতি হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন। বর্তমানে তিনি বাংলাদেশ ইউনিভার্সিটি অব হেলথ সায়েন্সেসের বোর্ড অব ট্রাস্টিজের চেয়ারম্যান এবং ইব্রাহিম মেডিকেল কলেজের গভর্নিং বডির চেয়ারম্যান।

 

তিনি বাংলাদেশের স্বাস্থ্যসেবা মডেল (ইব্রাহিম ডায়াবেটিস কেয়ার মডেল) উন্নয়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেছেন। ল্যানসেট পত্রিকা তার প্রোফাইল প্রকাশ করেছে, যেখানে তিনি বাংলাদেশের অসংক্রামক রোগ প্রতিরোধে অন্যতম অগ্রণী ব্যক্তি হিসেবে উল্লেখিত।

 

অধ্যাপক এ কে আজাদ খান ২৪৭টির বেশি বৈজ্ঞানিক প্রবন্ধ আন্তর্জাতিক জার্নালে প্রকাশ করেছেন এবং আটটি বইয়ে অধ্যায় লিখেছেন। তিনি বিভিন্ন আন্তর্জাতিক ও জাতীয় সম্মেলনে বৈজ্ঞানিক প্রবন্ধ উপস্থাপন করেছেন এবং বিশেষ বক্তৃতা দিয়েছেন।

 

তিনি একাধিক সম্মাননা অর্জন করেছেন, যার মধ্যে রয়েছে "মাওলানা আকরাম খান স্বর্ণপদক," "শের-ই-বাংলা পুরস্কার," "ডাঃ ইব্রাহিম স্বর্ণপদক," এবং ২০১৮ সালে সামাজিক সেবার জন্য বাংলাদেশ সরকারের "স্বাধীনতা পুরস্কার"। ২০২১ সালে তাকে বাংলাদেশ সরকার কর্তৃক জাতীয় অধ্যাপক হিসেবে নিয়োগ দেওয়া হয়।

National Prof. AK Azad Khan

 

Prof A K Azad Khan obtained MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College in 1965 with distinction in Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine. He was honored with Col. Jafrey Gold Medal for best performance in Pakistan in the FCPS (Medicine) examination of 1970 held by College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan. He obtained D. Phil from the University of Oxford in 1977. During his D. Phil research, he discovered 5 ASA-based drugs which is still the main long term treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).  He was awarded Honoris Causa from the University of Basel, Switzerland in 1999, honorary FRCP (London) in 2001, Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 2001 and Honorary Fellow of the University College London in 2012.

 

After returning to Bangladesh in 1977 Prof. Khan devoted himself in organizing the Gastroenterology Department in the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR) where he served in various capacities, from Assistant Professor to Professor, until 1987. His effort was not confined only in the then IPGMR ( Presently BSMMU), rather it resulted in expanding Gastroenterology services all over the country. He is the Founder President of the Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society. Through the society and through his personal initiatives Prof. Azad Khan has been able to establish Gastroenterology as one of the most advanced and prestigious medical disciplines in the country. In 1990 he joined as full-time Director of Research and Development in BIRDEM (Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders)  and worked in that capacity till the beginning of 1998. Through his guidance during this period a Research Group has been created at BIRDEM which has now attracted national and international reputation for good quality research in various biomedical sciences.

 

Apart from research activities Prof. Khan played a key role in  planning and development of various Projects and Affiliates of the Association in general and BIRDEM in particular. The phenomenal expansion of activities of the Association during the recent years, including the creation of National HealthCare Network (NHN) and Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) intimately related to the ideas and initiatives of Prof. Azad Khan. He was elected Secretary General of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh in the year 1998 and remained in this capacity until March 2007, when he was elected as the President of the Association ( Continuing). He is now  Chairman, Board of Trustees, Bangladesh University of Health Sciences, Chairman, Governing Body, Ibrahim Medical College.

 

In addition to his attachment with the Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society and Diabetic Association Bangladesh Prof. Azad Khan is also associated with a number of professional and social welfare organizations. He was the Founder General Secretary, then President and now Honorary President (for Life) of the Bangladesh Endocrine Society and Honorary President (for Life) of the Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society.  He is a former president of the Diabetes in Asia Study Group ( DASG).

 

Prof Khan  is well reputed for his scientific activities and also for the development of sustainable healthcare model (Ibrahim Diabetes care Model) especially designed for developing nations. The Lancet published his profile as the prime mover for Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention in Bangladesh ((http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2812%2960297-9/fulltext?rss=yes)). He persuaded the Bangladesh Government to sponsor the UN resolution for the UN day on diabetes (Nov 14 every year). He successfully completed a Micro Health Insurance Study on Garments Workers in Bangladesh.

 

Prof. AK Azad Khan has published more than two hundred and forty seven scientific publications in the peer review journals. He has also contributed chapters in eight books on medical sciences. He has presented scientific papers in numerous international and national meetings and delivered special lectures and orations in many scientific meetings.

 

Apart from professional articles he has written-several popular articles and books on health and health related matters.

 

He has won a number of awards for the contribution in medical and social sciences, including the “Moulana Akram Khan Gold Medal” for the contribution in Medical Sciences, “Sher-e-Bangla Award” for social services, “NIPA Foundation Award” for social services, “Honoree Bangladesh Medical Association of North America”, “Nawab Sir Solimullah Gold Medal”, “Health Award” for Extra Ordinary Contribution in Diabetes, “Dr Ibrahim Gold Medal” in recognition of contribution to healthcare, “Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah Gold Medal”, “Global Award” of  International Diabetes Federation, “Awarded, Dharitri Bangladesh”, and “Gyanalok Puraskar 2017” for  outstanding contribution to the country's medical and health sector by Agrashar Bikrampur Foundation. He received the “Rotary SEED Award” from Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka in 2024. He is an honorary fellow of IDF.

 

He received “The Independence Day Award 2018” from the Govt of Bangladesh for Social services. This is the highest National Award.

 

 He is appointed as National Professor by the Govt of Bangladesh since May 2021.
